Resumo
The Health care Waste Service (RSS) are generated by all the services related to human and animal, being important for the risk they represent as potential source of pathogenic microorganisms and hazardous chemicals. The inappropriate handling of RSS can lead to damage the environment and public health. Whereas the Resolution of Collegiate Directors (RDC) N°. 306, 07 December 2004 recommended that health services are responsible for all waste generated by them and that knowledge of waste composition is the starting point for implement a plan for managing these wastes, it is proposed in this study to characterize quantitatively the RSS generated by hospitals in VitÛria-ES (RSSHV-ES). The main objective of this study was to determine the gravimetric composition and specific weight of the health care waste service generated by the hospitals in VitÛria, EspÌrito Santo, according to the classification of RDC ANVISA n°. 306/2004, to provide input for improving their management. The methodology was the use of a questionnaire to diagnose the management of each hospital and experimental studies seeking to characterize the RSS. The results showed that the 64% of the weight of waste in plastic bags for packaging of infectious waste are components of Group D. The results also indicate that no statistically significant difference between the samples. Thus, predominantly the residues that contribute in greater quantity in the composition of the RSSHV-ES are similar to household waste, showing failure of phase segregation of RSS.
