Resumo
The purpose of this study was to analyze how Afro-entrepreneurs in Espírito Santo undertake to understand some relations between race and entrepreneurship. To achieve this goal, I used a theoretical approach on race relations in the Brazilian context and on Afro-entrepreneurship. Methodologically, I used the descriptive qualitative approach. The data were produced in conjunction with six Afroentrepreneurs living in Espírito Santo, based on participant observations and semistructured interviews. For data analysis, I used interpretative narrative analysis. The main research results show that Afro-entrepreneurs can be configured as social entrepreneurs; they undertake out of necessity, accumulate more than one source of income, work in excessive hours, studied in public schools, live in peripheral neighborhoods and have informal businesses. Afro-entrepreneurs have, based on their products and services, disseminating knowledge related to their Afro-Brazilian ancestry. The pride in being black is present in several moments of the reports produced in this study. The relationship with the job market has been reconfigured within Afro-entrepreneurship, moving from a "hard area" to a "black space" where entrepreneurs are valued by their clients who seek them by identification. Difficulties, limitations and strategies are reported in this context. From a study, we realized that it is urgent to think about actions that increase the insertion and permanence of black men and women in schools, universities and in the labor market. The limitations of this study are concentrated in regional and temporal terms. As a research delimitation, we do not address gender intersectionality. It appears as possibilities for future research the deepening of other issues experienced by Afro-entrepreneurs based on the intersectionality of race, class and gender
