Resumo
In developing countries, deficiencies in waste management are frequently identified, highlighting the urgent need to expand solutions that encourage the development of new treatment and final disposal routes. These actions aim to reduce the volume of waste sent to landfills, as well as promote recycling, the circular economy, and the energy recovery of waste from selective urban waste collection. In this context, this study sought to highlight the main barriers to energy conversion from the use of waste from selective collection, assessing the impact of the heterogeneity of the materials collected and the high costs of implementing and operating Energy Recovery Units. Based on a broad, systematic literature review, economic and environmental scenarios for energy recovery from waste and rejects from selective collection were evaluated. From an economic perspective, the assessment, covering the period from 2025 to 2045, demonstrated that the CDRJU is highly viable, if specific market conditions are considered, such as the addition of a gate fee and the scope of the free market is taken into account, since, in conditions of revenue fluctuations, the tailings proved to be more stable, due to the reduced operational scale.
