Resumo
Visceral leishmaniasis is a public health problem that affects 65 countries, with 500,000 new cases reported annually. The geographical spread of the disease and its urbanization have been reported in several countries, including Brazil. From the 80s, the urbanization of American visceral leishmaniasis form (AVL) was more intense and the adaptation of the Lutzomyia longipalpis vector affected large cities and capitals in the Northeast, North, Midwest and Southeast. The presence of Lu. longipalpis in the Espírito Santo state is associated with a set of geo-climatic characteristics that defines the suitable areas to vector breeding. Setting these variables along a directed entomological survey made it possible to map the potential areas to the occurrence of AVL in the state. In order to continue the surveillance and to verify geographic disease expansion, a sampling survey was conducted in the canine reservoir in the potential areas of risk of transmission the municipalities of João Neiva, Afonso Claudio, Rio Bananal, Vila Pavão, Mantenópolis and Santa Teresa. The rapid test DPP® LVC was adopted as serological screening and ELISA LVC® test as a confirmatory method, both from Bio-Manguinhos. Out of 215 dogs were investigated, 91.16% were natives from the areas and 92.10% were asymptomatic. Regarding the serological analysis, 213 dogs showed negative result in the rapid screening test DPP® LVC (canine visceral leishmaniasis). However, the two that were reagents in the screening serum samples showed negative results by ELISA. The presence of infection by L. infantum chagasi was not demonstrated. The potential transmission risk ocurs in rural areas that are out of the corridors of state migration, although bordering the endemic municipalities.
