The dental ceramics are the main materials in science and art of aesthetic reconstruction of teeth. The aim was to identify the incidence of fracture of total ceramic crowns among groups of individuals with different patterns of worn dentition. As well, the effect of individual and clinical variables that influenced in these results. Through medical records, radiographs and digital photographs, 112 of prosthetic crowns, from 43 subjects were analyzed retrospectively, in a range of 120 months. Among the analyzed crowns were observed 10 catastrophic fractures. Equally distributed among the genders; more frequent among people aged 40 to 49 years old; among those individuals were married; among those employed in the private sector and among those with clinical signs of worn dentition. About the intraoral location and dental vitality, there was a higher incidence among the molars and vital teeth. Among the different ceramic systems were studied, crowns on infiltrated glass ceramic (InCeram alumina/Vita®) had the highest incidence. In relation to the time in function, the incidence was higher in a short-term than the long-term analysis. It was concluded that the incidence of fracture was small among the crowns of these research. The ceramic systems were considered as alternative in the oral rehabilitation of individual, even with clinical features suggestive of parafunction due the clinical performance observed in the long-term analysis.
