Resumo
A case study was accomplished to retell distance-learning history in São Mateus and analyze its contributions on teacher training from the tutor’s point of view. Historical and legal aspects from distance learning were addressed as well as its implementation during interiorization plan of Federal University of Espírito Santo. In addition, it was presented an overview of the consolidation of Polo UAB from São Mateus-ES, the students profile and the municipal demand for teacher training. Moreover, it was pointed out the main scientific production on teacher training specifically those focused on distance learning. Based on data analysis, it could be noted that courses were not offered to meet the required demand of municipality of São Mateus. It was noted that former students from Polo UAB São Mateus were approved in the last public contest to work in municipal and state government. Data analysis of a survey form, answered by tutors, showed high drop-out rates. These mainly refer to the student’s personal issues and student’s lack of time to accomplish commitments previously scheduled by distance learning program. It was also noted that there were not enough incentives either to open new courses handling with teacher training or to maintain the offers for vacancies in the existing courses. The results indicated that the usage of suitable public policies could effectively keep on contributing to the teacher education from basic to continuous training.
