Resumo
Tooth loss is considered one of the main health problems due to its high prevalence and to express a failure of previous preventive and / or curative measures. The objective of this dissertation was to determine the prevalence, extent and factors associated with dental losses in adults and the elderly. In addition, it aims to evaluate the impact of oral problems on the quality of life of these individuals in association with socio-demographic variables and oral conditions. A total of 303 individuals were evaluated, using a clinical examination and standardized interview, using data collection guides, including the Oral Health Impact Profile in its simplified form with 14 questions, grouped in seven dimensions (OHIP-14). To verify the associations between socio-demographic variables and oral health conditions, Fischer's Exact Test was used. To assess the strength of association, Oddis-Radio (OR) was used. He verified the association of the independent variables with the seven impact dimensions evaluated by the OHIP instrument. To analyze the effect of the combined dimensions, the Mantel-Haenszel test was used. The results showed a prevalence of 84.5% for dental losses, caries was the main cause of loss (68.7%) and molars were the most extracted tooth (90.2%). Most reported the expectation of restoring missing teeth with dental implants (43.8%). The factors associated with dental loss were: female sex (p = 0.006), age range over 50 years (p = 0.000), up to 10 years of schooling (p = 0.024) and have visited the dentist in the last 12 months (.051). The highest prevalence of impact on quality of life was described for individuals: female, older than 50 years of age, of economic classes C and D, who had up to 10 years of schooling, lost previous teeth, lost more teeth and who needed a prosthesis. In view of the high prevalence of tooth loss found to be caused mainly by caries, the need for continuous monitoring of oral health of the populations is reinforced, advocating primary care to reduce the disease burden. In a context of high prevalence of dental loss, there was a marked perception of impacts in adults and the elderly, evaluated by OHIP-14
