Resumo
An ethnographic case study that works on the research question: how the use of the Problem Solving methodology can contribute to the teaching-learning process in a mathematical reinforcement for students with learning difficulties and age-series lag in a municipal school of Teixeira de Freitas (BA)? The general objective was to analyze the contributions of Problem Solving in the teaching-learning process of students with age-grade lag by means of a mathematical reinforcement by applying the Teaching-Learning-Assessment-Mathematics methodology through Problem Solving proposed by Allevato and Onuchic, associated with the principles for solving problems proposed by Polya. The subjects of the research were ten eighth grade students from a public school in Teixeira de Freitas (BA), aged between 16 and 18 years. The classes took place between March and July of 2018 and covered the topics operations with positive and negative numbers, numerical expressions and equations of 1st grade. Initial and final diagnostic evaluations were used to compare and verify students' learning about the topics covered. The instruments for data collection were participant observation, available documentation and focused interviews. The data were analyzed through categorization, developed from three categories elaborated a posteriori: students 'posture in face of problems, students' posture related to the teaching-learning process and teacher-student relationship in problem solving. The results evidenced the students' predilection for the problems classified as conventional and verbal and point out the importance of social interactions and didactic interventions directed to the specific needs of each student with learning difficulties. In addition, reinforcement classes have resulted in improving students‘ confidence, as well as improved understanding of concepts related to the topics covered.
