Therefore, it is considered necessary that the inhabitant, an agent immersed in territorial dynamics, assume the leading role in the operation of territorial heritage. Thus, the aim of this work is to contribute to the discussion and methodological development for the valorization of territorial heritage, based on concepts referring to proactive patrimonialization, disconnected from institutions, through the actions of a projecting community. To this end, the methodological approach of the Italian Territorialist School – ETI is adopted, articulating and expanding conceptual and practical understandings in a transdisciplinary way, between architecture, philosophy and geography. Under a qualitative and descriptive approach, the research methodology is characterized by experimental and participatory actions. The activities linked to the methodological approach intend to analyze proactive patrimonialization as a theoretical and practical procedural conception, develop and experiment a proposal for interaction with a community context in order to identify local processes, considering the values of identity, resource and territorial capital. The interaction is anchored in participant observation, in which the researcher positions himself as an observer of a local reality, in order to investigate it through a direct relationship with the interlocutors, understanding the context of the research and collecting the necessary data to identify attributes that refer to actions linked to the proactive patrimonialization process. In this sense, the work aims to achieve a new interpretation regarding the way of acting on the territory as heritage, contributing to the understanding that the force that moves patrimonialization comes from the subject-place link and the local community project in which it is inserted, through the mobilization of inhabitants around a common objective

The territorialist approach comprises the conceptual expansion of heritage, by considering territorial heritage as a result of the co-evolution between the natural, built and anthropic environment. From this perspective, the valorization of territorial heritage is considered fundamental for territorial planning and self-sustainable local development. Furthermore, the description, interpretation and representation of identity stand out as stages of the territorialist methodological framework. The representation of identity is developed through the reorganization of methodologies, techniques and cartographic instruments to produce qualitative analyzes and syntheses of the territory. Thus, starting from the understanding of the map as an essential tool, and its use in the Identity Representation stage to investigate local characteristics in territorial planning; as well as the need for active participation of communities during this process, the importance of developing and applying participatory methodologies is discussed, especially in the construction of mappings. In this context, this research feeds back on conceptual and methodological understandings regarding the notion of “Community as a Laboratory of Identity Representation”, CoLaboRI, which was developed by the researcher in previous studies, and understood as an important interactive method in order to value local knowledge, stimulate communities‟ narratives and awareness about the territory. Thus, the territorial area chosen for the study is located in the interior of the state of Minas Gerais, and consists of the Rio Doce State Park and its immediate surroundings. The Park is an important conservation unit, considered the largest remnant of the State's Atlantic Forest biome. However, the section under study highlights macro-level aspects associated with the use of the territory, which affect the harmony between nature and culture. Therefore, we seek to investigate the nature-culture relationship at the local level, in a multidimensional reading, as well as the specific Community-Park relationship. In general, the aim is to apply CoLaboRI in communities in the Rio Doce State Park. To this end, a qualitative, descriptive and participatory action methodology is used, organized according to the following activities: bibliographical research on the theoretical and methodological framework; presentation of community mapping experiences coordinated by Italian Territorialist School; analysis, synthesis, organization and systematization to define CoLaboRI assumptions; preparation and application of the participatory methodology in CoLaboRI; description and analysis of the ColaboRI experience; qualitative analysis of community maps and content analysis of group dialogues; proposition of statutory and strategic guidelines for territorial planning, integrating the nature-culture binomial and activating social participation; synthetic figurative representation for CoLaboRI, in line with Italian Territorialist School procedural schemes. As a result, the experiments carried out in the research laboratory communities, Santa Rita (Marliéria) and Celeste (Timóteo), made it possible to identify important territorial sediments; invariances and transformation rules; multidimensional and multiscalar contexts; as well as important advances and understandings for CoLaboRI, which can be applied in other territorial planning processes, under different socio-territorial contexts

The process of identity representation makes explicit the value of heritage work in society, by allowing the re-elaboration of memories and historical representations, of permanent, persistent and even disappearing structures in cycles of territorialization. In contemporary times, the difficulty in promoting the longevity of territorial heritage stems from the imbalance between the forces of domination (political-economic) and/or appropriation (cultural-symbolic) in the production of society-space; which leads to the fading of qualities and specificities of places. Therefore, the issue lies in establishing conceptual and methodological foundations in representation strategies that strengthen symbolic territories (difference, multiplicity, affective security) with the agent community of its representation - capable of guaranteeing the valorization of memory and history in cultural and political dimension. The identity representation aims to reconstruct and communicate the territorial identity, highlighting material and cognitive sediments – structural invariants – in the historical and memorial duration. In turn, the use of geoinformational technologies in this process, materializes the information in new fields, allowing its continuous updating. From this understanding, the objective is to elaborate an identity representation of the territory in which the community is an agent. Therefore, the general objective was structured from four specific objectives. As specific objectives, we have: a) conceptualize history and memory and understand their contribution in the documental process; b) explore the concept of documentation and heritage representation, understanding what and how they document/record; c) establish the methodology for geoinformational representation; d) carry out an experiment of historical-memorial identity representation based on the atlas with the participation of the community; e) analyze and describe the conformation of the territory from the concrete object adopted for the research. The concrete object adopted is the city of Colatina, a relevant municipality in the colonization and economic development of the north of the State of Espírito Santo. The implementation of the Vitória-Minas Railroad, in 1906, is considered one of the investments with the greatest impact on this development, in the city and in the region. In this way, the railroad is adopted as an object of space-time clipping, as it encompasses sediments of patrimonial value – permanence and persistence inscribed during the cycles of territorialization - affirming the identity of the territory. For this purpose, qualitative methods of descriptive and analytical scope are used, based on i) conceptual theoretical approach related to the thematic pair Documentation and Representation; ii) written, iconographic and cartographic documentary research, of public and private collections, in a historical scope, as well as interviews with the local society –in the memorial scope, for the identification of the territorial heritage of the study unit; iii) the representation of historical-memorial documentation, with the use of geoinformational resources, in the production of the Territorial Heritage Atlas, anchored in three integral strategies in the process of unveiling the identity values of the places - description, interpretation and representation and iv) analyze the experiment, in order to identify and propose a system of participatory tools for the elaboration of the historical-memorial representation. In this way, the result is the identification and proposition of a participatory representational process, which allows the re-elaboration of memories and representation of stories, with the aim of reaffirming and preserving the territorial identity

The landscape can be defined as the expressive territory of identity, whose character derives from the action of natural and human factors and their interrelations. The landscape is, therefore, the historically constructed territory. Understanding the landscape as a reference for territorial identity places it as a mediator in plans and projects for the territory. It is understood that, despite advances in the field of landscape and scientific production resulting from the European Landscape Convention, there are still impasses in implementing effective actions for the protection, management and ordering of urban landscapes. In this sense, the landscape project is understood from the territorial heritage, a reference to guide design strategies for the restoration of the dynamics of landscape formation. To this end, the methodological approach of the Italian Territorialist School - ETI is adopted, articulating notions and methods in an interdisciplinary way, between architecture and geography. Based on the recognition of territorial heritage, the ETI proposes the concept of territory understood as heritage, or “territorial heritage”, historically constructed by human actions in nature, defined in the relationships between the physical environment (environmental system), the environment built (territorial-landscape system) and the social environment (anthropic system). The research theoretically and methodologically faces the elaboration of a double narrative - historical-structural and morphotypological - based on the interpretation and representation of territorial heritage and intends to discuss the possibility of identifying a landscape morphotype and what elements are used for its representation. Thus, considering the constant urban transformations and taking into account the scenario of loss of landscape value and the relationship with its structuring elements, the work aimed to identify the territorial-landscape heritage of Juiz de Fora/MG, and indicate which Elements of the territory can be considered to think about the landscape morphotype. Under a qualitative and descriptive approach, the research methodology was characterized as empirical (SERRA, 2006). The activities linked to the methodological approach intended to: (a) identify, describe and represent the landscape and the structuring elements that presuppose the territorial-landscape heritage; (b) identify and analyze permanences, persistence and ruptures in the territory under study in order to understand its potential; (c) recognize analytical typological units of the territory and (d) establish conceptual and methodological indications for the representation of landscape morphotypes. The work was developed from the activities of bibliographic review, documentary research, observational research, identity representation of the territory, synthetic description and analysis and interpretation. In conclusion, it is understood that the landscape constitutes a strategic factor and access to the valorization of the territory, from which it can be managed based on the principles of sustainable development

The territorialist approach proposes the "return to the place” through representation and planning, and suggests a new understanding of the territory, and the sediments that compose it, as heritage. Starting from the analysis and synthesis of the territorialization, deterritorialization and reterritorialization cycles (or TDR Cycle), it is possible to identify the permanence of material, economic and cognitive sediments that conform "structural invariants" – in other words, the relationship of structuring assets of local identities that endure over time. The TDR cycle comprises the path of transformation of nature into territory through territorializing anthropogenic actions (Territorialization), events and agents that cause disruptions and disturbances in socio-spatial arrangements (Desterritorialization) and their recreations (Reterritorialization). Despite the conceptual extension, contemporary planning shows a partial understanding and a segmentation of heritage, dissociated into two distinct dimensions - Nature and Culture - based on unsustainable development models resulted from a functionalist-reductionist approach. In addition, contemporary planning has served as a subsidy to the interests of capital and of certain dominant classes, contributing to the process of capitalist production of space and causing subsequent and concomitant cycles of “continuous deterritorialization”. In this reflexive context, there is Vila de Itaúnas, headquarter of Conceição da Barra’s district (ES), in which the capital hides behind the mask of real estate speculation and of exploratory tourism, intensifying the process of gentrification of the local native population. On the macro scale, it is possible to observe around the village and throughout the far north of Espirito Santo, the territorial domination of agricultural industrial activities and eucalyptus monocultures in large areas. Thus, under the thematics "Heritage", "Planning" and “Development”, this study aims to establish premises for the local development of Vila de Itaúnas, based on the resumption of its territorial and heritage values, contributing to strategic planning actions. The specific objectives are: a) to produce historical research of the territorial production process of Vila de Itaúnas supported by a critical conceptual apparatus; b) to establish methodology for the elaboration of the TDR Cycle; c) to accomplish the TDR Cycle of Vila de Itaúnas; d) to outline discussions and questions regarding the levels of unsustainability in the village's territory. Pursuing these objectives, a methodological path is defined based on a hybrid approach between empirical-descriptive-qualitative methods, having as its core the historical-relational analyses of the territory: i) formation of a conceptual foundation about territory, the production of space/territory; heritage, territorial resources, territorialization, deterritorialization, reterritorialization and local development; ii) investigation, selection and construction of a descriptive-analytical-representative method for the elaboration of the TDR Cycle; iii) systematization of documents, geographic and statistical information, iconographies, reports, material, etc., through documentary-bibliographic research; iv) approximation and spatial understanding of phenomena through the elaboration of maps by manipulating available georeferenced data; v) field survey, on-site mapping, photographic record, observation of the territorial area, interviews and reports and life stories organization; vi) organization, analysis and synthesis of data and material collected/prepared towards the development of Vila de Itaúnas’ TDR Cycle and proposition of premises. The result of this work is the identification of eight territorialization cycles in the history of Vila de Itaúnas, distributed in six distinct historical periods. A reterritorialization centered on self-government and the strengthening of local bonds is stated. The final product is a collection about the concrete object and its present/past, in order to understand the issues surrounding it and to assist sustainable transformation processes in the future.
