Quem é Guirigó, o "Rapazola retinto" em Grande sertão: veredas?
(Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo, 2019-07-29) Oliveira, Rízia Lima; Dutra, Paulo Roberto de Souza; Trefzger, Fabíola Simão Padilha; Salgueiro, Wilberth Claython Ferreira; Fiúza, Felipe de Oliveira
It intends to approach the theme of childhood in João Guimarães Rosa’s work. The main child character that is analyzed is Guirigó, featured in Rosa’s critically-acclaimed novel entitled Grande sertão: veredas, first published in 1956. Switching between closer or more distant views, an investigation of other young characters in the author’s work completes this analysis in order to measure how the character Guirigó was conceived. It will make possible to enlist similitudes and differences between the character and how Brazilian childhood aspects are constituted (rather unequally, it must be said). In spite of an extensive critical fortune upon the life and the work of João Guimarães Rosa, the child character is very little explored by literary critics. Therefore, it aims to present an inaugural study about the character called Guirigó. This study will allow us to go deeper on the research of his constitutive characteristics as a result of life in the sertanejo environment marked by misery and violence also taking into consideration not only his physical, psychological or social aspects, but also the fact that he had a black origin. The analysis is based on Walter Benjamin’s concepts of childhood and its social function; on Jaime Ginzburg’s concepts of violence; on Vânia Resende’s concepts about the child’s role. Some other scholars that study João Guimarães Rosa’s work such as Antonio Candido, Walnice Galvão, Willi Bolle and Leonardo Arroyo will be basis for a deep analysis of the novel. The main objective is to contribute with the studies of Grande sertão: veredas specifically when it comes to suggesting a comparative look upon Rosa’s child characters.

It analyzes the humor in Lourenço Mutarelli's "O Cheiro do Ralo" (2011), a Brazilian novel in which the plot, as the title predicts, revolves around the unbearable smell (of "shit") that comes from the drain, which makes the protagonist paranoid, because he cannot stop the bad smell and believes that the drain is the gate to hell. It studies the narrative literary humor from the linguistic point of view, considering the studies of Vladímir Propp and Luiz Carlos Travaglia; historiographical, from the observations of Georges Minois and Quentin Skinner, and philosophical, based on the reflections of Yves de La Taille. It analyzes Mutarelli's novel from two aspects: existential humor and sad humor. It perceives that the humorous resources most used in the novel, irony, exaggeration and the expectancy violation guide the narrative to the close connection of Mutarellian humor with the grotesque and the coprological, whose effect is the feeling of sadness.
