Resumo
Through March 2011 to December 2012, 30 survey cruises were conducted in the coastal region of the Doce river, North coast of Espírito Santo state, aiming to evaluate the habitat use patterns and group structure of Sotalia guianensis. The surveys were carried out by boat, following a predefined travel route. Environmental variables data were collected every one hour of sampling or group sighted. Three different habitats were identified by Cluster analysis based on the similarity among environmental variables. During 242hs48min effort 1,523km were traveled and 119 groups Sotalia guianensis were sighted. Groups of guiana dolphins, even those with immature individuals, occurred in this region all year round, not showing seasonal differences between the dry (April to September) and rainy seasons (October to March). Group size showed an average of 9.9 individuals. Immature animals were observed in most groups (71%), showing a direct relationship with the number of adults. The Guiana dolphins showed an almost exclusive use of the open sea region adjacent to the mouth of the river presenting a heterogeneous habitat use pattern, where the areas of highest concentration of dolphins are not the same of the preferred feeding areas. The results obtained in this study reflect how S. guianensis responds to the complexity of biotic and abiotic factors of the study area, indicating a differential pattern of habitat use for the species.
