Resumo
The literature about gender and politics still points to an under representation of women in institutionalized politics, a challenge to the democratic project, and an impasse to gender studies. The persistence of gender inequalities in the everyday dimensions, encouraged by the sexual division of labor, conditions the social spaces occupied by women and men and keeps the separation between the public and the private, with the subalternization of the second, which affects gender equity in formal politics. Such evidence makes us question the barriers to women’s careers in the representative democracy in Brazil. Inserting this theme and selecting the legislatures between 1983 and 2014, the research presents the narratives about the political trajectory of ten women who had success at reaching the National Congress, maximum legislating instance in Brazil, and which is still markedly masculine. They are from Espirito Santo, a state that had the best proportional results in the election of women to the House of Representatives in 2010. The main methodology is the oral life stories, together with the documental research, added to the survey about the legislative production of those women. The objective was to analyze their social status, their projects along their careers, their gains and losses, obstacles and possibilities, tensions and conciliations, in the light of the questions present in the debates about gender and politics. They believe that they “do politics” differently from men, with more social and ethics concerns, which, in a way, they notice to embarrass their party-membership and political careers. They live, acutely, the tension between career and family, acknowledging the high price they pay to keep themselves in the political field. However, they recognize the relevance of their choice in participating in the power of the State. This study has the purpose of contributing to the studies on the same area in other parts of the country and adding to the reflection about democracy and women’s condition as political subjects in Brazil.
