Resumo
In the 19th Century, Brazil was visited by several foreign travelers, who wrote several reports about its territory, describing its flora and fauna, its cities and customs, among others. The narratives of those travelers helped to spread in Europe a certain view of the New World. Concerning the 19th Century, it is noticeable that almost all travelers studied, in higher or lower degree, the fauna and flora, observed social life, assessed labor and production relations and were interested in issues related to slavery and the Indians. In this context, a French traveler, Auguste François Biard, traveled through Brazil passing through Rio de Janeiro, Espírito Santo and Amazon. His narrative describes, specially, the nature and the Indians, with valuable comments for the comprehension of what was the province of Espírito Santo in the 19th Century. The present dissertation analyzes the comments by the French painter about the capixaba’s landscape and Indians, from the assumption that Biard, at the same time that shared the other travelers’ views about the visited lands, he also had a singular view, guided by irony and exaggeration. This work covers both the narrative and the pictures produced by Biard during his stay in the province of Espírito Santo. In his report, the painter shared romantic ideas about the nature and the Indians. However, his particular views appear in the moments when he shows a very different reality from those idealized by other travelers, for the forest is not only a place of beauty and spirituality, but also the habitat of insects and dangerous animals. Besides, when approaching the Indians, Biard goes further than the idealization of the noble savage: the Indians also have vices, are lazy, indolent and coward.
