Resumo
Tuberculosis control is one of the main Brazil health policies. The early diagnostic of tuberculosis is part of the strategies from Health Ministry and it’s supposed to happen at the Primary Health Care (PHC) level. To be succeeding it’s necessary the identification of respiratory symptomatic (RS) individuals defined as everyone fifteenyear-older with cough for three weeks or more. It’s estimated that the proportion of RS at the population who demands the PHC is about 5%. The knowledge of the real proportion of RS in a county and possible difference among the population at the local services is important, because it can support the planned action for tuberculosis control. This study purposes to estimate the percentage of respiratory symptomatic (RS) among the population who demands health care at the Primary Health Units (PHC) in Vitoria, state of Espirito Santo. This is a descriptive, cross-sectional study. The data were collected from people fifteen-year-older, in 18 PHC. Six hundred and three people were interviewed and 164 reported cough as symptom. Twenty four (4% of them) people were considered as RS. Nine of them provided at least a first sputum specimen, all of them negatives. Most of RS (71%) hasn’t searched the PHC services because of the symptom cough. It means that the passive detection, might not allow the tuberculosis case finding. The percentage of RS was closer to estimated from the Ministry Health. This data can be used for RS finding planning, adopting different strategies on their identification at the different territories in the county. The results should guide the tuberculosis control actions at Vitória, Espirito Santo.
