Resumo
Hatha-yoga is an intervention providing physical, mental, spiritual, and social benefits to its practitioners. Several benefits to women with breast cancer in different conditions have been assessed. This survey is a controlled clinical trial for evaluation of Hatha-Yoga’s effects on anxiety and stress on mastectomyzed women. Secondarily, the effects of that intervention were investigated on blood pressure (BP), heart frequency (HF), and respiratory frequency (RF) of women from the experimental group, as well as movement amplitude (MA) of both homo and contralateral shoulders to mastectomy, before and after intervention in both groups. The sample comprehended 26 women from experimental group, and 19 from control group, assisted in the Hospital Santa Rita de Cássia, in Vitória, Espírito Santo, Brazil. For data collection, interview with registration in the formulary was used, along with STAI-STATE trait anxiety inventory (IDATE) and Stress Symptoms List (LSS/VAS). BP, HF, and RF were measured in experimental group before and after practices; shoulders’ MA was measured in both groups, both in the beginning and at the end of intervention. For data analysis, SPSS was used – 17.0 version. The findings are statistically significant and demonstrate that Hatha-Yoga intervention decreased both stress and anxiety in experimental group after practice (p<0.05). In that group, HF and RF decreased significantly too, after all the interventions, whilst BP remained unchanged, that is, without relevant modifications. Both flexion and abduction movements improved more in the 2 groups. It is concluded that Hatha-Yoga is an efficacious instrument for mastectomyzed women to face their disease, since it favors self-knowledge, self-esteem, and emotional balance. Furthermore, Hatha-Yoga is an important instrument for health professionals, especially physiotherapists, since that intervention mitigates vital parameters and helps in the functional recovery of those women.
