Resumo
The drive (Trieb) is a fundamental concept both in psychoanalytic and philosophical thought. Sigmund Freud, in structuring his theory of the drive, engages in a dialogue with Schopenhauer’s concept of Will, especially regarding how this concept is understood: as a force that operates unconsciously and escapes the control of the Ego. This dissertation investigates, based on Freud’s explicit references to the German philosopher, how the relationship between the two authors is established, focusing particularly on how each conceives the dynamics of the psyche. In both cases, it concerns an unconscious force that emerges from organic bases, producing psychological effects and mobilizing the subject. The work explores various points of contact between Freud and Schopenhauer, such as the distinction between instinct (Instinkt) and drive (Trieb), the subordination of reason to the forces of the drive, the notions of suppression of contents by consciousness, sublimation, and the role of sexuality in the constitution of subjectivity. Of particular note is the proximity between schopenhauerian Will and Freud’s death drive, where the thought of both acquires broader speculative and philosophical contours. In this sense, the dissertation further proposes an interlocution between metapsychology and metaphysics, exploring points of convergence and the limits of these epistemological models.
