Abstract
The book “A história da Filosofia no Estado do Espírito Santo: resgatando a memória” (The History of Philosophy in the State of Espírito Santo: Rescuing the Memory), by Antônio Vidal Nunes, recovers the academic and intellectual trajectory of the first generation of professors from the Department of Philosophy at the Federal University of Espírito Santo (Ufes) during the 1970s and 1980s. Known as the "patriarchs of philosophy teaching" in the region, these thinkers — mostly with a Catholic background — were fundamental to the consolidation of local philosophical thought and the movement to reintroduce the discipline into high school education. The work highlights the contributions of Fr. Adwalter Antônio Carnielli on Karl Popper's epistemology connected to the Ecclesial Base Communities; Fr. Geraldo Lyrio Rocha on the critical analysis of Brazilian patriarchalism and the defense of Christian humanism through Liberation Theology; and Carlo Bússola on popularizing philosophy and developing a plural metaphysics that engaged with political and African thought. The study also examines the legacy of Aloísio Krohling regarding human rights and Karel Frans van den Bergen in the Philosophy of Biology, mapping how these intellectuals connected universal problems of the philosophical tradition to the historical and social demands of the regional landscape.
