This area of Marine Sciences involves knowledge that mixes the interaction between human populations, available resources and coastal and marine environmental conditions. OS arises in order to enable the understanding and manifestations of different social actors about the oceanographic approach. In addition, OS discusses the importance of disseminating information generated by Science in an accessible way to society, so that knowledge reaches different social strata. Thus, it is important to understand the perception of social groups involving discussions about marine litter to define comanagement actions. In this sense, this study aimed to carry out a bibliometric analysis of the data available in the literature about the perception of social actors in Brazil, involving the approach of Socio-Environmental Oceanography and marine litter. In this sense, was possible to identify: (1) the research groups active in the theme nationally; (2) the regions in which such surveys were carried out; (3) the academic degree of each publication; (4) the time scale of scientific production; and (5) the social groups involved. The number of publications found was considered low (n = 57). Due to the fact that theme ‘garbage’ is present in everyday social life, it was expected to find more studies about the subject. Their geographic distribution was considered heterogeneous, indicating a concentration of this type of research in regions close the coast. Probably, the proximity with the coast promotes greater identification of the population and research groups with the 'marine litter' discussion and, therefore, in these areas this type of research is carried out more than in areas of the interior of the country. The number of scientific articles produced is similar to the number of publications considered 'gray literature'. The publication process in specialized journals can be expensive and timeconsuming, which can justify this equity in quantity. Public universities are responsible for the largest number of publications, as they function as a pillar of the 'teaching-researchextension' triad. Furthermore, an increase in research on this topic was observed from 2011 onwards, probably because of the Federal Government's incentive to research from the year 2000 onwards. This increase may also be a result of the valorization of research on the perception of local actors. All social groups associate the presence of garbage with people's bad habits. In addition, environmental education is identified as a solution to minimize existing pollution, so that civil society, public management, teaching and research institutions, and companies act in harmony with environmental improvement Thus, the lack of studies on the perception of social groups involving the theme of marine litter in Brazil is evident, which indicates the need to carry out studies on the subject.
