- ItemAnálise das internações por causas externas no Estado do Espírito Santo(Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo, 2011-03-29) Alochio, Ana Carolina Antunes; Amorim, Maria Helena Costa; Castro, Denise Silveira de; Zandonade, Eliana; Jorge, Maria Helena Prado Mello; Alves, RosanaThis descriptive study is about morbidity by external causes; its purpose is to describe the profile of hospitalizations due to external causes along with their costs in the State of Espírito Santo, Brazil, from 1998 to 2007. Brazilian Unified Health System’s Database of Hospital Informations, codified after the 10th review of the International Diseases Classification, was used. The hospitalization rate from external causes (6.3%) was the 7th in the ranking of general causes. The external causes’ growth tendency was 36% along the historical series. Male cases prevailed (71.2%), as well as the 20-29 year-old age group (20.7%). The most frequent causes were accidental injuries (71.4%) – mainly falls, followed by traffic accidents (17.2%) and aggressions (6.6%). About ages, falls stand out from 20 to 59 years old, traffic accidents from 15 to 49 years old, and aggressions from 20 to 39 years old. The main injury was traumatism, whereof limbs and femur fracture, as well as skull traumatism, stood out. External causes require shorter hospitalization time than natural causes, although both average- and day-cost are higher, with growth tendency of 115.1% and 117.8% respectively. The average hospitalization time was 6 days. Non-classified external causes required the longest hospitalization (9.5 days), followed by external causes’ sequels (8.6 days), aggressions (7.3 days), and traffic accidents (7 days). Hospital mortality rate was 2.73%, mostly due to legal intervention and war operations (8.33%), aggressions (5.84%), and traffic accidents (4.89%). The average expense in hospitalizations due to external causes (R$597.88) was 10.1% higher than that for natural causes. Non-classified external causes cost more (R$2,873.27). The day-cost of hospitalizations by external causes (R$98.83) was 29.9% higher than natural causes’ (R$76.03). Non-classified external causes produced as well the highest day-cost (R$302.45).
