Resumo
It is undeniable that the sertão is more than space and surrounding context in works such as Os Sertões (1902) by Euclides da Cunha. The word overflows the limits of its literal denotation and becomes space, time, character and raw material of this language artwork. By choosing ―sertões‖ as its aesthetic sign and semantic referent par excellence, of concrete and symbolic meaning in the book, Cunha presents to his translator the challenge of translating the sertão to other languages and cultures. In this research, we will consider the different perspectives and meanings attributed to the word "sertão" within the Portuguese language and the solutions found by translators to effect their creative transposition into the English language in the following translations: Rebellion in the Backlands (1944) by Samuel Putnam and Backlands: The Canudos Campaign (2010) by Elizabeth Lowe.
